Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health care profession in Ontario. Chiropractic doctors use non-invasive, hands-on techniques to diagnose, treat and prevent disorders related to the spine, nervous system and joints (musculoskeletal system).

After taking a thorough history, performing a physical examination, and determining the diagnosis, a chiropractor will develop a comprehensive treatment plan based on the specific needs of the patient. A typical treatment plan may include spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercises and other non-invasive treatments. Nutritional, dietary or lifestyle counselling may also be implemented to educate patients and improve their quality of life.

Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions.

Medical Acupuncture

Contemporary medical acupuncture is a therapeutic method of care where fine needles are inserted into precise anatomical points. These points are determined based on the individual needs of the patient and their conditions.

Medical acupuncture is used to relieve pain, improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, correct dysfunction, improve function and mobility of the affected areas of the body. It is often used in the treatment of many conditions both acute and chronic, including: joint pain, back pain, headaches, and others. Acupuncture has many benefits independently, and complements chiropractic treatment nicely.

During medical acupuncture the needles can be stimulated manually or with electricity for therapeutic purposes. Electro-acupuncture can be used to help dysfunctional areas of the body that may be causing pain or injury.

Dr. Tkachuk received her Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Certification from McMaster University.

Soft Tissue Therapy

Soft tissues in the body include structures such as muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons. These tissues can undergo tension due to a variety of different causes; ranging from poor posture, to traumatic injury. This tension may produce pain, tenderness, or changes in your everyday movements. Soft tissue therapy aids to release this tension through guided patient movements, sustained pressure, and stretches. This can be done with a hands-on or an instrument assisted technique.

Dr. Tkachuk is SMART Tools certified, and implements these tools as needed, or in addition to traditional hands on techniques. SMART Tools is a form of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM).
